Daily College Fantasy Football – WR Picks – Week 1 (Thursday)

There are some solid guys to pick from at WR and today I bring you my top picks for the Thursday Week 1 matchups. Based on the opening week salaries (which tend to be a bit off) and limited number of Thursday games to pick from – I don’t think you need to dip much further into the cheaper/sleeper type WR’s unless you have a good reason to do so.

Thursday August 28th FANDUEL Game Schedule:
Texas A&M @ South Carolina
Wake Forest @ ULM
Boise State @ Ole Miss
Tulane @ Tulsa
Temple @ Vanderbilt
Rutgers @ Washington State

Utah WR – Dres Anderson draft kings #1 (tie) $6,500
So I’ve been hearing good things from Utah camp about Dres from the head coach … so that’s good … and he’s in line for a good game against Idaho State. He’s tied with Strong (below) for the most expensive WR on DraftKings.

Arizona State WR – Jaelen Strong draft kings #1 (tie) $6,500
There’s been plenty of hype behind Strong, who’s come into camp in very good shape. He should have a big day week 1 against cupcake Weber State, and you risk the game getting out of hand early.

Ole Miss WR – Laquon Treadwell vs Boise St fanduel #3 – $7,200
Is making the move to outside WR this season, which might drop his PPR effectiveness, but should open up some bigger plays & chunks of yardage. He faces a Boise St. defense at home week 1 that’s about middle-of-the-pack when it comes to pass defense last season. His upside is probably priced into his value week 1, but he’s a solid play in your daily college fantasy football lineups this week.

Boise St. WR – Matt Miller vs Ole Miss fanduel #2 – $7,500
Is facing a capable Ole Miss team on the road, and appears to be 1 of 2 WR’s on the team that will get significant run. Against a softer defense he might be a lock, but you do risk the Ole Miss defense keying on him to slow him down. Given the limited matchups on Thursday – he’s a solid option, but if you want to save some money – his teammate Shane Williams-Rhodes might be a sleeper WR play out of all the Thursday games.

Washington State WR – Gabe Marks vs Rutgers fanduel #1 – $7,800
Gabe is the #1 rated WR for the limited Thursday game schedule and is capable of having a big game against a poor Rutgers secondary. Marks was arrested this off-season, but fans/bloggers seem to think he looks ready to go during WSU fall camps. Marks is a little inconsistent, so it might not be wise to revolve your entire lineup around him beasting … but he does have the potential to have a nice day. UPDATE: I’m worried about his injury status – and will likely head into the game in question. I’ve dropped him down the rankings a bit because of the injury, but if he’s a full-go he’s one of the best WR picks of the night. I’ve seen other reports saying he’s going to red-shirt. Something odd is going on with the team (as the starting RB was demoted to scout team this week) it might be that you look for other WSU WR”s against this soft defense (I have 2 listed in the sleeper WR list below).

More Week 1 Daily College Fantasy Football Picks:

Boise St WR – Shane Williams-Rhodes vs Ole Miss fanduel #11 – $5,100

While Matt Miller is getting the daily fantasy love – Williams-Rhodes is a very capable WR and only posted 2 games last season where he had less than 5 catches. He’s not going to be a huge yards muncher or TD catcher … but he’s likely going to be involved in the game plan and is a valuable PPR WR. I don’t particularly like the matchup against a well above-average Ole-Miss team, but his price is a few thousand dollars less most WR’s on Thursday & for week 1.

Texas A&M WR – Malcome Kennedy vs South Carolina fanduel #4 – $7,100
I don’t like the matchup that much … and it’s life after Johnny Football so we’ll see how Kennedy’s numbers compare to seasons prior. But I think Kennedy is a somewhat safe(ish) play though considering A&M is going to be behind in this game – and he’ll likely get some cheapy dump-down PPR catches late in the game. Keep in mind though, Kennedy’s upside is priced in already being one of the more expensive Thursday matchup WR’s.

Rutgers WR – Leonte Carroo vs Washington State fanduel #5 – $6,500
TD’s came in bunches for Carroo last season, as every time he caught a TD in a game … he caught at least 1 more. He missed 4 games and still had 9 TD’s. I like the matchup and I think Rutgers will be throwing in this game, but very risky due to Carroo’s inconsistent track record at coming through. His price leaves some room for upside and I could see him being a cheap #3 WR with some upside.

ULM WR – Rashon Ceaser vs Wake Forest fanduel #7 – $5,400
Ceaser got rolling at the end of last season finishing with 4 straight 100+ yard 1+ TD games. Before that, he was fairly consistent at getting 4 or 5 catches per week. He faces a Wake Forest team that has turned over it’s defense line – and likely means good things for opposing teams offense. I think Ceaser has some upside at his price & is a fairly safe #3 or possibly cheaper #2 WR based on the matchup & limited Thursday night games.

South Carolina WR – Shaq Roland vs Texas A&M fanduel #6 – $5,400
SC’s going to run the ball … but A&M’s pass defense is well known for being one of the worst in college football. I might jump on the Shaq bandwagon later on in the season, but even with the limited number of choices available at WR on Thursday – I think rolling with Roland is more of a gamblers start than a sure thing. He battled a mix of injuries last season and still really only has 1 or 2 good games … in his entire college career … so I’ll avoid him until he proves he’s elite. If Shaq is too expensive, WR Damiere Byrd is likely the teams #2 option at WR and is capable of a solid game.

Sleeper WR Plays

Like I said at the top of the page, I don’t think you need to dip this cheap on WR’s this week given that I was able to fill-out numerous lineups I felt good about with almost no trouble of going over the salary cap. However, in Head-to-Head type scenarios, I could see that playing a sleeper could give you an edge – so I will post any WR I feel falls into the sleeper category here. More will be posted as they become apparent.

Washington State WR – Isiah Myers vs Rutgers
I LOVE the matchup here, and the starting QB says he has the best rapport with Myers out of all the WSU WR’s. If Gabe Marks were to miss the game, I would upgrade WSU WR Vince Mayle given the matchup and the fact Washington State is starting a young RB.

Texas A&M WR – Speedy Noil vs South Carolina
I’m not going to risk starting a freshman on the road against one of the country’s best teams …. but …. Noil is the #1 WR recruit and appears to have locked up the outside #2 WR position on a team that will likely rely heavily on the pass. WR Ricky Seals-Jones is also a viable sleeper and is a value pick this week.
